Mother's Day Beauty Gift Guide

Mother's day is fast approaching, do you have your gifts ready yet? Maybe you are buying for your mother or grandmother, or maybe for someone special in your life that has been just like a mother to you. Beauty gifts are a great idea for Mother's Day. Whether the recipient is a beauty junkie or newbie, there is a gift for everyone on the list below. Mother's Day is a great excuse to get an important woman in your life something that will help her relax, boost her self-esteem, or even just splurge on something she wouldn't normally buy for herself. I've included some of my favorite beauty gifts, and since I absolutely love homemade gifts (they can be some of the most special gifts of all) I'm including some ideas to make your own gifts as well.
My number one Mother's Day tip, however... MAKE YOUR OWN CARD! You don't have to be an art wizard.. A little card stock, markers, glitter, stamps, stickers, anything-- and you have a special, heartfelt memento. You don't have to be a kid to make your Mom a card!
Well, on to the gift ideas!

For the Gardener:

Crabtree and Evelyn Gardener's Shed Bag
This is an adorable gift for the lady who enjoys gardening. C&E's Gardener's Hand Therapy is a wonderful hand cream that I use myself, whether I've been gardening or not! It has a soothing fragrance with hints of lavender and sage. This set also comes with Gardener's Cuticle Therapy and Hand Scrub. I know many a gardener who neglects her hands in favor of digging in the dirt of a beautiful garden... with this set you can have a gorgeous garden and gorgeous hands! It also comes with a trowel and spade in an adorable veggie-themed bag.

For the Traveler:
bareMinerals Wanderlust Desert Collection

This kit makes a great Mother's Day gift, whether the recipient wears a little or a lot of makeup. Filled with pretty, useful basics like black eyeliner, sheer peach lip gloss, and black mascara, it makes a nice present for someone who likes to travel light. Even someone with an enormous makeup collection will appreciate this set, and the colors are universally flattering.

For the Frugal Makeup Lover:
Dior Diorshow Mascara
This is a wonderful gift for the lady who likes makeup, but usually sticks to the drugstore variety. Surprise her with a makeup splurge.. at 25.00 a pop, Mom might not normally buy this mascara for herself, but will appreciate the little luxury! For many, Diorshow is the "Holy Grail" of mascaras..offering long, thick beautiful lashes.

For the Manicured Mama:
 Zoya Nail Polishes
For the well-manicured mother, Zoya nail polishes are an excellent choice. Known as the industry's longest-wearing natural nail polish, these high quality lacquers are free of formaldehyde, toulene, and DBP. Available in every color imaginable, it would be a great gift to choose a few colors that fit your mom's style. Shown is "Sooki", an amazing classic red.

For the Spa-Aholic:
J.R Watkins Calming Bath Soak
If your mom loves to relax and pamper herself, treat her to this soothing bath soak by J.R Watkins. This nearly 150-year-old brand produces natural bath and body products that are 100% natural. Let mom soak her stresses away with this delicately-fragranced, affordable gift.

For the Fragrance Fanatic:
Philosophy Amazing Grace
Lots of people like to buy their moms perfume for Mother's Day, its a really classic gift. If you choose to go this route, Philosophy's Amazing Grace is a real crowd-pleaser. A classic, light, clean floral, this fragrance is absolutely lovely and feminine.

Homemade Gifts

I love giving and receiving homemade gifts. Mother's day is a perfect opportunity to make something special for your mom. Think about the talents you have.. are you a sewer or knitter? Perhaps you can make a lovely watercolor or have a knack for prose. There are all sorts of meaningful gifts that you can create yourself, including lots of beauty gifts. A few clean mason jars and some pretty ribbon and you can make your mom some special homemade beauty treatments. Here are a couple recipes to get you started:

Happy Hand Exfoliant

"Ingredients:
  • 1 ounce ground almonds
  • 1 teaspoon clear honey
  • 2 teaspoons walnut or sunflower oil
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Directions:
  1. Mix all ingredients together into a thick paste.
  2. Rub a heaping teaspoon all over the hands for two to three minutes and rinse off. Use whenever your hands need some extra TLC."

Body Scrub

"You need only four ingredients to make these moisturizing exfoliants. The base can be made from either Epsom salts or sugar, depending on whether you want a large or fine grain. Color the scrubs with shades that are in keeping with some of the scents you use -- pink with grapefruit, for example, or green with eucalyptus. Makes about 2 1/3 cups.

Tools and Materials

2 cups Epsom salts or organic cane sugar
1 cup carrier oil
8 drops essential oil(s)
1 drop food coloring
Special equipment: plastic pipette, canning jars

Body Scrub How-To

1. Stir together Epsom salts or sugar and carrier oil in a bowl, mixing well.
2. Using pipette, add essential oil, 1 drop at a time. Add food coloring, and stir until color is even throughout. Spoon into canning jars.
3. Download clip-art labels, enlarging or reducing to fit top of canning jar if necessary. Print onto ink-jet bumper-sticker paper (which is designed to withstand water). Cut out the labels, and affix to clean jars.

Gift-Packaging Idea

With their flip-top lids and gaskets for sealing, canning jars have a clean look and also keep any oil in the scrub from leaking. Decorate the jars with labels, and tie a pretty spoon or a bath sponge to the lid with waxed twine."
